Project Update: I-81 Reconstruction

Overview
The Syracuse, NY area is undergoing a major transformation of its primary interstate highways. This pivotal infrastructure project aims to enhance connectivity and improve the urban environment. Key elements of the project include upgrading a portion of Interstate 481 to be redesignated as I-81, demolition of the I-81 viaduct between Renwick Avenue and the I-81/I-690 interchange, constructing a new Business Loop 81 along Almond Street, and implementing extensive improvements in sewer and stormwater management systems.
Currently, Prudent Engineering is actively engaged as the prime construction inspection firm for the I-81 Viaduct, Phase 1, Contact 2 portion of the project which involves the demolition and reconstruction at the I-81 south end interchange with I-481. Our inspection teams are on-site daily, ensuring that all construction activities adhere to the highest standards of quality and safety. Through rigorous monitoring and detailed reporting, Prudent Engineering is committed to supporting the successful completion of this transformative project.
Overall Project Key Components
The realignment of the I-81/I-481 Southern Interchange (Contract 2) includes the construction of 5 new bridges, 1 replacement bridge, and rehabilitation of 1 bridge.
Contract 2 also includes the construction of 2 new roundabouts on Brighton Avenue for more efficient traffic flow and to improve safety for vehicles and pedestrians, as well as construction of 3 new sections of noise and visual barriers.
The existing I-481 southbound exit to Route 5 (DeWitt and Fayetteville) will be replaced by a widened to 4 lane ramp that provides access to both westbound and eastbound East Genesee Street. Route 5/92 will also be widened at Lyndon Corners and new crosswalks installed.
The bridge decks on existing northbound and southbound lanes of the I-481 bridge spanning the CSX railyard in East Syracuse will be replaced and widened. The bridge over Manlius Center road will also be replaced and widened.
