Q & A with Beverly Strachan, COO
SYRACUSE, NY

How long have you been working in Civil Engineering?
I began my career in 1984
How difficult was it to break into the field of Civil Engineering when you began your career? Were there any barriers you had to overcome, and if so, how did you accomplish that?
I started my career as a construction inspector trainee on a large NYSDOT project, replacing and constructing 12 bridges in Syracuse, New York.
For the most part, I did not face many barriers. I worked hard, had a passion for learning, and was fortunate to work with strong-minded, intelligent individuals who helped shape my career.
What do you see for the future of women in engineering and related roles? How big of a role do you think mentorship plays in the growth of women in this field?
I would like to see more women enter the engineering field. The numbers have definitely increased since I began my career; however, they still pale in comparison to our male counterparts. Programs such as STEM and changes in social norms should lead to greater opportunities and successes.
Mentorship plays a significant role—I have been fortunate to work with some of the sharpest professionals in the industry, who have helped shape my career and continue to do so.
What emerging trends or technologies excite you the most?
3D modeling, drones, and AI
Where do you see the biggest opportunities for women in the field?
The opportunities are endless. Many women hold high leadership roles within New York State DOT, NYSTA, NYPA, and numerous engineering firms. Hard work and perseverance do pay off.
What do you love most about your job at Prudent Engineering, and how has your company supported your success?
What I enjoy most is working with people, shaping careers, and delivering successful projects through communication and strong relationships. Prudent Engineering has always believed in me and provided the opportunities to grow and excel in our industry.
