County Route 30 in Philadelphia, New York
PHILADELPHIA, NY
Prudent Engineering’s Construction Inspection and Management team just wrapped up managing the replacement of a vital culvert on County Route 30 in Philadelphia, New York. With a challenging timeline of 75 calendar days, the project began in August and involves the removal of an existing box culvert that had been temporarily reinforced with an 86' x 36' steel culvert pipe. The urgency of this project was heightened by the water management issues resulting from heavy rainfall early in the construction phase.
Upon mobilizing, the project team encountered high water levels that necessitated a robust temporary diversion system to allow for uninterrupted excavation and construction. To manage this, a combination of pumps was deployed—a 6-inch pump alongside two 2-inch pumps—effectively controlling the water flow and ensuring a dry work area for excavation activities.
Excavation proved to be a significant endeavor, having dig down to the bedrock, approximately 19 feet below the existing road elevation. This depth, combined with the site's challenging water conditions, demanded precise coordination between the Prudent team, and the contractor. We maintained close communication to ensure that every phase of the work met regulatory standards and project specifications.
The collaboration between Prudent Engineering and the rest of the project team has been key to overcoming the environmental and structural challenges, ensuring that this critical infrastructure on County Route 30 will be restored and reinforced for long-term use.
