Building the Future: Chace Wimmer’s Land Surveying Journey
SYRACUSE, NY
How did your career at Prudent begin?
Leading up to my role at Prudent Engineering, I achieved many milestones and gained extensive experience in land surveying. I graduated from the SUNY ESF Ranger School in 2022 with an Associate’s Degree in Land Surveying Technology. Over the next three years, I worked at two land surveying firms specializing in boundary surveys, where I developed a strong technical foundation and deepened my understanding of the profession. I am also an FAA Part 107 Certified Remote Pilot, which has allowed me to conduct numerous LiDAR and photogrammetry flights—further expanding my expertise in modern surveying technologies.
How long have you been at Prudent Engineering and what have you gained since you began?
As of November 5th, 2025, I’ve been with Prudent Engineering for six months. During this time, I’ve been fortunate to receive incredible opportunities and resources to further expand my knowledge of land surveying. Prudent Engineering has introduced me to DOT (Department of Transportation) surveying procedures and standards, adding a valuable new dimension to my professional experience. I’ve also had the chance to work with some impressive equipment, including the Matrice M300 drone and the RTC360 scanner. Prudent Engineering’s commitment to investing in cutting-edge technology allows me to stay current with the latest advancements in the field and contribute to the company’s continued growth and innovation.
What do you enjoy most about working in Land Surveying?
There are many aspects of land surveying that I truly enjoy. In this line of work, you get to be a bit of everything — a designer, an artist, a pilot, and occasionally even a landscaper when you’re digging in someone’s front yard hoping to uncover a monument. My favorite part of land surveying, however, is the technology that comes with it — from hydrographic and aerial drones to terrestrial scanners. I take great pride in creating deliverables that make clients say “wow” the moment they see them.
How has your role or perspective evolved since you started?
My role at Prudent Engineering has continued to evolve as I take on greater responsibilities. I take pride in my work and always strive to give my best effort. I’m grateful that management has recognized this dedication and entrusted me with tasks that require precision and efficiency. My perspective on land surveying remains the same — it’s a profession I’m truly proud to be a part of.
What advice would you give someone considering a Land Surveying career?
Land surveying is far from a one-size-fits-all profession. It’s a physically demanding job that will test your patience on a daily basis. My best advice for anyone entering the field: always keep bug spray and toilet paper on hand — you’ll thank yourself later. And remember, whenever you think a situation can’t get any worse… it probably can (and will). But over time, the challenges become lessons, and the profession becomes more rewarding. The longer you’re in surveying, the stronger you grow — both mentally and physically.
What do you find most rewarding about being part of the Prudent team?
In my time at Prudent, the most rewarding part has been the positive atmosphere and constant smiles around the office. It’s truly a great environment, and I genuinely enjoy spending my days interacting with everyone. This is the first job I’ve had where I don’t find myself dreading Mondays — and that says a lot about the people and culture here at Prudent Engineering.
What’s next at Prudent Engineering for you in your career journey?
My goals at Prudent Engineering are to become a licensed land surveyor and to continue expanding my expertise in LiDAR and design survey work.
