21 Years in the Field: Chris Hansen’s Surveying Journey
BINGHAMTON, NY
- How did your career at Prudent begin?
I attended Paul Smiths College obtaining a 2 year associate’s degree in surveying technology from there I entered the surveying work force for a small private surveying company later moving on to larger firms conducting every kind of survey including Boundary (small and large), Topographic surveys for private individuals, oil & gas industry, and even state highways along with conducting Elevation Certificates.
- How long have you been at Prudent Engineering and what have you gained since you began?
I have been at Prudent since August of 2024 as an assistant project manager and party chief, doing mostly proposal work for what we hope will become future jobs.
- What do you enjoy most about working in Land Surveying?
The field work is the most satisfying – getting to see different areas of the state that you would not normally travel to. The specialty jobs are the most interesting to me, the ones that don’t always come around and make you think outside of the normal surveying role to get the job completed.
- How has your role or perspective evolved since you started?
I have learned more about writing proposals to obtain jobs.
- What advice would you give someone considering a Land Surveying career?
If possible, acquire a 4-year degree and take the SIT test as soon as possible.
- What’s next at Prudent Engineering for you in your career journey?
I am slowly working to become licensed and keeping my field skills sharp using my drone license to keep up with the changing technology.
