Across NYSDOT Region 2, many culverts had reached or were nearing the end of their service life, creating the need for proactive upgrades to support roadway reliability and effective drainage. As part of the Culvert Resiliency of State System (CRoSS) initiative—a statewide program focused on improving the safety, hydraulic performance, and long-term resilience of highway stream crossings—Prudent Engineering was retained as a subconsultant to support the reconstruction of 18 large culverts.

Services included design survey and mapping, right-of-way survey and mapping, and preliminary and final design for this multi-county effort. Prudent’s design work focused on culverts at two key locations: Route 274 over Steuben Creek in the Town of Steuben (C260130), and Route 167 over Beaver Creek in the Village of Dolgeville (C230493).

For these two sites, Prudent prepared preliminary engineering design reports and coordinated PS&E plan development. Detailed engineering tasks included cross-section preparation, concrete closure pour design, and culvert lift planning with crane capacity calculations to ensure safe and efficient installation. Additionally, detour route planning and work zone traffic control (WZTC) plans were developed to minimize disruptions and maintain safety for both construction crews and the traveling public.
