I-81 Viaduct Project Update: February 2025
SYRACUSE, NY

Significant progress continues on the I-81 Viaduct Project as crews push forward with key structural components. Recently, Prudent Engineering inspectors were on-site, closely monitoring the pile-driving process at the southbound CSX bridge footing. Using a diesel-powered hammer, the steel casings were driven deep into the ground to form the foundation for the concrete cast-in-place piles. This critical operation ensures the structural stability of the bridge as construction advances. (
Meanwhile, CNY Alliance contractors were busy installing rebar for the northbound CSX bridge footing, preparing for an upcoming concrete pour that will reinforce the structure. (
In the same area, new southbound CSX piers—spanning Pier 14 through Pier 9—have been completed and now stand between the northbound and southbound lanes of Route 481, just north of the CSX tracks. These piers are ready to support steel girders, which will eventually transform this section into a three-lane bridge in both directions. The placement of these girders will mark a major milestone in the project, enhancing traffic flow and improving long-term structural efficiency for the I-81 corridor. (Photo 3)
February also saw the execution of a mass concrete pour for Bridge 8’s south end spread footing. Large-scale concrete placements like this require precise coordination, ensuring proper curing and strength development to support the bridge’s superstructure. With each of these steps, the project is steadily progressing toward its ultimate goal of modernizing Syracuse’s highway infrastructure. (Photo 4)
